THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is a cannabinoid found naturally in raw cannabis and hemp plants. It is the acidic precursor to delta-9 THC. In fresh plant material, cannabinoids are commonly present in acidic forms. When THCA is exposed to sufficient heat, a chemical process called decarboxylation can convert some THCA into delta-9 THC.
Why does THCA show up on lab reports?
A certificate of analysis may list THCA and delta-9 THC separately because they are different compounds. Depending on the report, you may also see a calculated “total THC” value. Always read the actual laboratory results rather than relying only on front-label marketing.
What should shoppers look for?
Start with a recent COA tied to the product or batch. Review cannabinoid potency, testing date and any safety panels provided by the laboratory. For flower, also consider aroma, freshness, storage and the overall quality of the material.
